Jolly Sailor pub token

A couple of pub tokens from The Jolly Sailor, Starcross have turned up.
Research is ongoing about the exact purpose of these coins Pub tokens by the Ormskirk and West Lancashire Numismatic Society
Most pub tokens were for two and a half old pence;  which was the price of a drink.

This one was found in the garden of a 500 year-old cottage on the 'front street' in Starcross aka The Strand.

Does anyone know whereabouts The Jolly Sailor used to be?

  1. Hi I have just seen your post and I have come across The Jolly Sailor Inn along with Eagle Tavern, Ship Inn, and The courtenay Arms Inn and posting house. We also had a 'Fore Street' in the village. All can be found on Devon Heritage Page under Starcross in Robson's directory 1839. St Pauls Church was known as 'St Pauls Chapel of Ease' . It lists a whole host of trades. Very interesting. I am trying to research The Galleon Inn as it has a stone plaque with the date 1490.

  2. Thankyou very much indeed for your helpful information. Sorry I haven't replied before, but it was research for today's post about The Galleon that flagged up your kind reply here.
Please note that Starcross History Society intends to resume meets virtually during lockdown, via Zoom. The details will be posted soon.
    Thankyou again
