Constable or Wainwright?

Where is this?

The painting is called 'Cottage in a Cornfield'. It's in the Manchester Art Gallery. In 2006, the Tate Gallery said that it wasn't by John Constable. So who painted it?

Discussion on the web suggests that the location might be Starcross. UK Art Detective on the web

and that the painter was  Thomas Francis Wainewright.

Perhaps we could help by verifying the location. The only church near to Starcross with a plain tower is St Clement's Church at Powderham

The tower on All Saints, Kenton, has pinacles on each corner

Neither St Mary's Cofton
nor St Paul's Starcross has a tower

If  you can help the Art Detectives in their quest to discover the painter and the location, please comment below

Thankyou

  1. Hi. I was pleased to come across this blog as I am the person who originally started this quest. The painting has now been designated as being by Wainewright, although I still think that my arguments regarding Suffolk stand. I think of this part of Devon as being pastoral, although I only know it slightly from passing through by train. Does the countryside around Powderham bear any resemblance to that in the picture? How many people read the blog, and has anyone made any comment at all? Are there people in the community (farmers, dogwalkers, ramblers, geographers) who take a special interest in the landscape and who might be consulted? Of course to say that "nobody recognises it" proves nothing, but if it could be asserted that this is not South Devon, even allowing for changes in crop management or housing developments over the past two hundred years, that would certainly be of interest. Thanks for any help. Lynette Domoney. emld2@cam.ac.uk
